Statement of the National Commission of NSZZ "Solidarnosc" concerning war in Georgia

15 Aug. - The Presidium of the National Commission appeals for an immediate ceasefire to all parties engaged in the armed conflict in Georgia. Casualties among civilians and humanitarian disaster the citizens are experiencing, demand mobilisation of the world public opinion and governments of democratic countries in order to put an end to military actions and resolve the conflict in a peaceful manner with respect for the will of the civil society of Georgia, including trade unions.

We also call upon the authorities of Russia to unconditionally cease military operations in Georgia and immediately withdraw the army. At the same time, we call upon the governments of the countries involved in the conflict for take up the dialogue with the social partners in order to reduce losses and to find a way for quick compensation of the social and material damage, as well as to the governments and trade union organisations of all countries for humanitarian aid for the victims and their families.

The Presidium of the National Commission wishes to express its deepest sympathy for all the victims of the war in Georgia and the families of the casualties.

The Presidium also appeals to all friends of Georgia, to all the members and structures of the Union to donate blood for those in need in Georgia and to send in donations for humanitarian aid for the victims and their families to the opened bank account.
